Welcome to Atelier Dakar!

Welcome to Atelier Dakar, the first English-language blog tracking fashion and textiles in Dakar, Senegal, the fashion capital of Africa. I, your faithful reporter, am a DIY-obsessive crafter and textile geek by night, ethnographic researcher by day, trained as both an anthropologist and as a handweaver and textile conservator. I live in Dakar, Senegal, the world capital of high-quality African textiles (with the possible exception of beautiful Bamako, Mali). Since coming to Dakar to work on some (completely different!) research, I have been stunned by the glamor of Dakar fashion, both 'traditional' and 'street.' So, I've decided to write this blog as a side project to report on contemporary fashion and fabric in Dakar. I'll be including photos, interviews with stylists and fashion designers, commentary on recent trends in fashion, fabric, and the overall scene, and a review of press on African fashion and textiles.

Many thanks, and God save my dissertation,
Your faithful reporter.
